Can I Name My Best Friend as My Life Insurance Beneficiary in Florida?

Short answer: yes. In Florida, you can generally name anyone you choose as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy you own — your best friend, an unmarried partner, a chosen sibling, a godchild, or a charity. Life insurance beneficiary designations are one of the few places where the law follows exactly what you wrote on the form, not what a family tree says.

There is one concept worth understanding: insurable interest. At the time a policy is purchased, the person or entity buying it needs a legitimate interest in the insured person’s life — which you automatically have in your own life. When you buy a policy on yourself, you can typically direct the benefit to whoever matters to you. Where insurable interest questions come up is when someone else buys a policy on you, and that is exactly the kind of detail a licensed agent walks through during an application.

Why does this matter so much for chosen family? Because a beneficiary designation generally pays directly to the person named — usually outside of your will and outside of probate. If your legal next-of-kin and your actual support system are different people, the beneficiary form is one of the strongest, cleanest ways to make sure your money lands where you intended, without arguments and without “well, technically.”

The most common mistake is not a legal one — it’s an outdated form. People change jobs, relationships end, and the beneficiary listed on a years-old policy or 401(k) quietly stays the same. Check the beneficiary on your workplace coverage and retirement accounts periodically. It takes only a few minutes and can prevent a major mismatch later.
